Sub-Committee Reports

SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE SUBCOMMITTEE

Tina Clements and Brenda Yawn continue to facilitate the SOS group meeting until a survivor can be appointed to facilitate.  Tina reported that we continue with no attendance at this time.

Tina mentioned that we might need to re-think the meeting day in order to accommodate Scott Warren’s schedule. Tina will follow up with Clara on training.  We have had several write-ups in the newspaper announcing the SOS group.

Need to revisit the fillers to be placed in the newspaper.

Packets need to be distributed to the local funeral homes for survivors. Rhonda will talk with Townsend’s Funeral Home.  We need to obtain packets and form a subcommittee to get this done.

Marnie reported that they have been brainstorming ideas to have a meeting, Survivors of Suicide for Teens.  It would be a very informative group.  They have talked about the extra training that staff would need.  Sally vander Straeten & Sherri McGuinness have been a part of this discussion.

Clara Boyer will attend SOS Training in Sandy Springs, Georgia, on February 1-2, 2013.

Meeting Date:

Rhonda reported that she has set up a facebook page and Twitter account for SPC.  She is still working on it and plans to post the information to SPC website.  She reminded committee that she can include articles or any news related material on the web page.

RESOURCES

Marlena Dixon reported that we are running low on resources at this time.

YOUTH/CHILDREN

Youth Advisory Council:  Denise commended the Youth Advisory Council for the great job done in getting prepared for the Christmas parade and the Christmas tree at OFTC. She thanked everyone for participating with both projects.  The ornaments were on display at today’s meeting and Denise announced that they were for sale for  $7.00 each.  Proceeds will help support future youth projects.  Ellise has pictures of both events and will have this posted on SPC website.

The Billboard project for the youth will be announced in January and hopefully finalized by March 4, 2013.   Marquita suggested that the billboards have a visual presentation with a positive compelling message.  The students need to be creative. The billboards may be done individually or with a group, and the schools can submit as many entries as they would like.  Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places.  It was recommended for the Youth Advisory Committee to meet and discuss both billboard and video contest.  SPC will need judges for both events.

Several suggestions were made in order to display the entries for the billboard:

  • Have an art show at OFTC to showcase designs.
  • Display at the Dublin Mall or Library.
  • Could have a traveling display

Garrett-Lee Smith Grant (Federal Grant through DBHDD –3 year grant).

Marnie reported that the Sources of  Strength staff have met with Dublin High School, Dublin Middle School, East Laurens High, and are scheduled to meet with West Laurens High on 1/29/13. They have scheduled Adult Advisory Training on February 13, 2013 at Bldg #4.  Later, the Peer Advisory Training will be scheduled.

Marnie reported that we are up-to-date with financial aspects from our state.

SPC-DL may want to partner with the Communities in School on another event depending on financial status at the time.

QPR Training

SPC-DL met the training requirements for QPR for FY12; we are focusing on FY13. Marquita reported that she has done one (1) training for Social Workers and Kelly has done one (1) for Dublin Service League. There should be six additional trainings scheduled before the end of June 2013.

Other  reports/information/events:

Human Resource Directors in Local business community – Willie Paulk would be the contact person with information about the next Chamber of Commerce meeting.  Someone from SPC-DL may attend to discuss our coalition and how we might assist the Human Resource Directors in our area.

Destiny Allen reported on Teen Maze (May 2013) at the last meeting in October.  Connie is meeting with the School Administrators on Feb 6.  Teen Maze is the week of May 6th and targets eigthth grade students.

Tina Clements and Brenda Yawn attended the workshop, Working with Those Bereaved by Suicide of Mental Health Professionals, on December 3, 2012 in Albany, GA.  Two other CSB employees, Lynn Davies and Debbie Mullis, attended at a later date.

The Quilt Project – Gloria has gathered all but 8 names on the Butterfly Launch Memory list.  She will revise the letter and send out to family members.

The Suicide Prevention Screening Tool is still pending with DBHDD.

The Community Educator’s Project is also pending at this time.

United Way Agency – Gloria researched becoming a United Way Agency. Due to the limited financial resources for United Way, SPC-DL has decided not to pursue this membership at this time.  However, Margaret Turner suggested that there still may be benefits to becoming associated with United Way, even without financial support; SPC-DL will re-evaluate this at a future time.
