Suicide Prevention Community Youth Event (FY12):
Destiny Allen gave a brief follow-up of the Living Loud Youth Conference held April 12, 2012 at Dubose Porter Center in Dublin. The conference included college resources/ access, Armed Forces, financial aide resources, a tour of OFL Technical College and positive life style messages from various speakers. The conference targeted 10th and 11th grade students. Motivational Speaker, Mr. Keith Brown, kept the crowd “pumped up” throughout the day with a positive message for healthy thinking and healthy life styles. It is hoped that another conference will be possible next year.
Denise again acknowledged and expressed our thanks to CIS for securing the grant that made the conference possible along with contributions from the Suicide Coalition to make up the balance.
The Coalition had several conference T-shirts left over and they were made available today to any Coalition members that wanted one.
The highlight of today’s meeting was the viewing of the four videos submitted for the Video Competition. A panel of judges was present in March to judge the winners and the winners were announced at the conference. The winners received: 1st place – $500.00 (West Laurens High); 2nd place $300 (Communities in Schools); 3rd place $200 (Dublin High); and 4th place – $100 – (East Laurens High). The first place winners also received a “fine dining experience” at the Page House on May 15, 2012. Sherrie Malone expressed her words of sincere appreciation and compliments to the Coalition for the opportunity made available to the students and for the dining experience and those who served the students on that date. She stated that the students had really enjoyed this experience.
The law enforcement training video has been finalized. Special thanks was extended to Marquita Timmons, Connie Smith, Officer Brian Tapley (DPD) and Tina Clements for their participation and coordination of this effort. Ellise will send a thank you note to Mr. James Deal and the staff at TV 35 for their generous support. TV 35 allowed us to use their facility for filming the video at no cost. This video was also viewed at today’s meeting and was well received.
We have met our QPR training expectation for the fiscal year contract (8 training sessions).
Kelly Canady notified Ellise that he plans to conduct the QPR training sessions at Dublin High School as soon as school resumes and he is able to get this coordinated and scheduled. These sessions will assist us in meeting new contract requirements for the upcoming fiscal year.
Strategic Planning Meetings were held in December 2011. This document has been distributed to the Coalition and will be a working document. Additional meetings will be held to do more work on prioritizing and fully developing our goals. Goal planning was suspended until after the “Living Loud Youth Conference” was completed.
The Coalition will continue to meet every other month with the entire coalition and alternate monthly meetings being conducted with smaller work groups and subcommittees needed to address strategic plans, goals and events.
We have conducted three events this year (only two were required by our contract): The Memory Launch in October, Dr. Grigsby’s training session in November, and the Living Loud Youth Conference in April.
Sherrie Malone and Summer Faulk were informed that the Coalition will need two new Youth Advisory Council members next year, due to the graduation of Seniors, Leondra Davis (ELHS) and Haley Morgan (WLHS).
Tina Clements has submitted a request for the SP Coalition to approve the purchase of a table cover to use when the Coalition participates in exhibit events. Our banners are still being used, but at times a table cover is more appropriate and convenient. The Coalition approved this purchase today. Gloria Bowen will pursue this.
Denise reviewed information from an email Margaret Turner sent to us regarding a video game that may help prevent teen depression.
Report from Sally vander Straeten’s Office:
During March Sally shared documentation about the CSSRS – Columbia Suicide Severity Risk Screening (Columbia Medical School). The state plans to implement this during the next contract year. Columbia Medical School continues to work with Georgia to roll this out in the public domain (with contracted hospitals, crisis units, G-CAL, and mobile crisis units). Denise and the CSB staff have introduced this screening tool to staff at Fairview Park Hospital in a recent meeting as well.
Sally and Sherrie have discussed the proposal for Dublin/Laurens to host a state –wide coalition meeting. They are very receptive of this idea and will assist us in carrying this out and setting the agenda. A tentative date has been set for September 12, 2012. This will be a one-day event from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Sally stated that participation would be approximately 75 plus individuals from various State and Local Coalitions. A location will need to be secured. A planning meeting will be held in June to begin coordination of this event.
Sally also contacted Ellise this week and reported that we (Dublin & Dodge County) will most likely be awarded the Garrett-Lee Smith Grant. This was great news!!! We look forward to hearing more from this in the near future. Adam Lesser will contact Lisa Montford to discuss the grant.
