April 30, 2014

MINUTES

The Suicide Prevention Coalition (SPC) of Dublin-Laurens Sub-committee met today with 7 present. The objective of today’s meeting was to debrief the “Living Loud 2014” Youth Rally scheduled for April 16, 2014 at the Dubose Porter Center. There were approximately 330 students in attendance from East Laurens High, West Laurens High, Twiggs County High, and Dublin High with an overall count including adults of 371.

Students arrived on time and without incident. However, the rally started later than scheduled. Committee agreed that next year, we need to have a time keeper. The “Welcome” committee, Denise Forbes, Jackie Curtis, and Keith Brown did an excellent job in opening the rally followed by drawing for door prizes. The door prizes were excellent. During the first session, Financial Aid by Carol Lott had to be cut short due to time restraints. She was able to cover her key components of her topic. The second session, Sources of Strength impressed the students and time was allotted for those who wanted to tell their stories.

Lunch

Lunch routine went well. Due to the lower number of students expected to attend, we had approximately 30 lunches left over.

Contest – Public Service Ad

All the public service ads were very good. TV 35 was present and taped a newsfeed that they will broadcast. They also agreed to run all 3 public service ads on TV 35. Ellise will contact Georgia Public TV to see if they would run the ads. Jakimva will contact WMAZ, possibly Portia Lake.

  • Awards – $450 – CSB of Middle Georgia
    • $200 – 1st place – West Laurens High
    • $150 – 2nd place – East Laurens High
    • $100 – 3rd place – Dublin High

Student/Staff Surveys

Destiny collected the surveys and reported that she had great response from the students. Many of the students answered “Yes” to increase of knowledge.

Vendors

Again, committee felt that the students did not have enough time to visit with the vendors. Dublin High had to leave due to the bus drivers needing to return to school. Suggestion was made to give students more time throughout the day but the vendors do not come in until later in the day.

Departure

The students left on time to get back to their schools. The clean up was much better than last year.

Security Issues

There were some college students coming into the rally and they were trying to intermingle with the high school students. A Security Officer from OFTC came in and asked them to leave after Lisa had already asked and the Security Officer help monitor the halls. Next year, we can close the doors to that section of the facility and post signs.

Discussion

Fund Raisers for next year

Need to start raising funds for next year. At the next full coalition meeting, we will discussed fund raiser ideas and identify a couple to start working on. Ideas presented were:

  • Community Carnival
  • Color Run
  • “Out of Darkness” Masquerade Party (Dr. Seward could do the decorations and Margaret Turner and Dr. Seward could take pictures.       Tentative date – Late September or early October, 2014)

Membership Drive

Need to get more people involved in the coalition. Discussed having a membership drive and branching out to other communities/counties. Events that may increase attendance are:

  • Evening Candlelight Event – Invite Community Partners, local churches, sheriff’s department.
  • Butterfly Launch

Ellise has a DVD of the event and she will keep on file in her office.
