The Suicide Prevention Coalition Dublin-Laurens (SPC-DL) met today with 19 present. Denise opened by welcoming the members, acknowledging the Coalition’s third year, and thanking Coalition members for their support over the past three years.
Minutes 6/25/13 (Coalition meeting) & 7/25/13 (Strategic Planning Meeting) motions made to approve and carried.
Survivors Of Suicide Subcommittee
Clara Boyer completed the Survivors of Suicide Facilitator training in August 2013 .
Marnie and her group will be working on Youth Friendly Survivors of Suicide packets; will discuss with Sherrie McGuinness.
Amy Williams gave report on SOS Team.

Marlena continues to research for new materials.
Students’ art work is now on display at the Laurens County Library; will remain there until 9/26/13. Payton Towns wrote an article for Courier Herald on the billboard and artwork display.
Annual Suicide Prevention Coalition Conference is in Rome. Tina and Denise will attend. If others are interested, let us know.
Youth/Children (Sources of Strength)
Sources of Strength (SOS) meeting is scheduled for 8/28/13 at East Laurens High School. Through SOS grant participants in the schools who participate in surveys can be awarded $10.00 for participation.
Marnie reported that they are excited about the second year of the SOS grant. The new contract is forthcoming from DBHDD for SOS implementation in schools in 2013-2014.
Marnie acknowledged school personnel and Child and Adolescent staff and showed appreciation for all their help in making the Sources of Strength a successful program.
Marnie reported that there has been a change of administration in Treutlen County schools, and she will have to start over with implementation process of SOS there.
She gave the sign-in sheet to Ellise Tapley today (8/27/13) and Ellise will invoice.
Youth Advisory Council
Kelly Canady reported that Dublin High School has identified 6 Peer Leaders (2 from each grade level). They are also continuing with table tents in cafeteria with subjects from the Sources of Strength wheel. This is going well. In May 2013, the focus was Generosity and the August 2013 focus was Healthy Activities Each month they will highlight a different subject from the wheel throughout the school year. They are doing a “Trusted Adult Tree” at Dublin High in September. This will be a school-wide event.
The schools will need to identify 2013-2014 Youth Advisory Council. Need to replace two seniors who graduated. Ellise will send email to counselors to remind them to appoint new members. A date for a Youth Advisory Council meeting needs to be set also.
Marnie Braswell, Katrina Veal, Amy Williams, and Daphne McMahon are the newly certified QPR instructors.
Kelly Canady will again conduct QPR training at Dublin High School. Throughout the day on Wednesday, 9/4/13, he is scheduled to teach classes.
Connie Smith conducted a QPR training 8/3/13 – Jordan Stream Baptist Church, Toomsboro, GA.
GA Power Grant – Dina McDonald will assist with this after the September Substance Abuse Forum has been held.
Denise gave report on spending past three years:
2011 – $2500
2013 – $5000
Community Youth Events have had supporting funds from CIS & support from the local schools (transportation, etc.)
Denise discussed the need to become creative with fundraising ideas. The FY14 goal is sustainability of coalition. We are slated to receive $4000.00 this year from DBHDD; however we have received no final word yet.
Fundraising options were discussed:
o Quilt Raffle – Connie McDaniel will check with a quilting group
o Poker Run
o Bunco Tournament – check with Judi Davis (Service League)
- United Way application is on hold until early next year (2014). Some Abundant Life staff & consumers will participate in the “Kick-off Breakfast & Day of Caring” on 9/3/13.
- Gloria Bowen & Daphne McMahon participated in the VA MH Summit on 8/22. Charity Naim was present today from the VA and gave a report on the event. She stated they had only 34 participants. The VA plans to expand this on a smaller scale with events across VA’s in the local area
- No further word on the Suicide Screening Tool from Sally vander Straeten, but Community Service Board of Middle Georgia will be adding to the EMR.
- Laurens County Life magazine – article for this will be a FY 14 project. Possible completed by Dina McDonald.
- Starfish Project – To educate providers on being able to assist consumers in moving on and avoiding memorializing traumatic events through child appropriate hands-on training activities. Dates set for Nov. 7, 2013 Jan. 16, 2014 Feb. 13, 2014 Trainers: Amy Williams, Latoshia Tharpe, Calecia Moorman
- Denise reported on the Strategic Planning session held 7/25/13; goals are prioritized as follows:
o Structure of Executive Team & Coalition Sustainability
o Garrett-Lee Smith Grant
o Community Education
o Youth Advisory Council
o Survivor of Suicide Services
o Annual Conference
o Availability of Services/Evidenced Based Practices
o Gatekeeper Training
The next meeting is scheduled for 9/24/13 at 11:30 a.m. at CMHC, Building #5.
