The Suicide Prevention Coalition Dublin/Laurens County met today with 24 present. Denise Forbes opened the meeting with words of welcome and introductions. The minutes of the July 24, 2012 Coalition meeting were approved.

SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE SUBCOMMITTEE

Meeting Schedule: Fourth (4th) Tuesday of each month – V.A. Hospital – Dublin.

In Kris Taylor’s absence Tina Clements reported that attendance continues to be low to none. Denise reported on the Community Partner Education Presentation that she and Tina Clements provided at the August 2, 2012 Dublin/Laurens Chamber of Commerce Meeting addressing the Suicide Prevention Coalition, the SOS Group, and Unity House. It was again noted that Pilar Archila has offered assistance with media through the program that she hosts with TV35. Kris Taylor is coordinating this effort and will promote the support group and the quilt project.

Kris is also following up with Sheri McGuinness about sending some brochures so that we can add our local information to the brochure for distribution to families, etc.

We continue to address the needs of promoting the Quilt Project. Gloria Bowen gave report on our efforts to reach out to those individuals who provided the family names (32 names) for the Memory Launch in October 2011. Gloria stated that we have about half of the addresses collected. Kris Taylor is also coordinating with Payton Towns to promote this in a newspaper article.

Sonya Rice gave a brief report on the event at Macon Behavioral Health on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Rise Phoenix Tour. The event hosted filmmakers, Thomas Brown and Zachary Chipps who were biking cross-country to connect with Survivors of Suicide. A balloon release was conducted and Kris Taylor was the guest speaker for this event. The event was a combined effort of Macon Behavioral Health, Rice Phoenix Tour, The Macon Mayor’s Office, and the Bibb County Coroner’s Office. Houston County Coalition also participated in this event.

Another idea for promoting suicide preventing would be to address the local Human Resource Directors in our business community. Will follow-up with the Chamber about this.

YOUTH/CHILDREN

Youth Advisory Council: The school counselors were reminded today that we will need two new 11th grade students to serve this school year; one from Eat Laurens (Summer Faulk) and one from West Laurens (Sherrie Malone). If Trinity Christian School system will participate this year, we will have a total of 8 students on the Council. A meeting will also need to be scheduled for this group to meet.

Garrett-Lee Smith Grant (Federal Grant through DBHDD –3 year grant). Lisa Montford continues to communicate with Adam Lesser. One goal of the grant is to educate all school personnel in QPR and to implement Sources of Strength in the schools. At present we are waiting on the grant funds to be issued to us. It is also noted that CSB of Middle Georgia is the first CSB to be awarded this grant as the anchor agency for a Suicide Prevention Coalition. Letters of intent have been secured from Laurens County, Dodge County, and Dublin City schools. The Laurens County & Dublin City school systems will the target schools for the first year of the grant. Through this grant effort, Adam has sent us four additional self-training QPR packets.

QPR Training

Kelly Canady plans to conduct QPR training sessions tentatively during September at Dublin High School (six sessions total).

Denise asked the County School Counselors about their efforts in this area. Hopefully some training can be offered in the county schools this school year. Denise reported that she and Tina have a scheduled presentation, by invitation from Mr. Johnson, County School Superintendent, to provide education about the Suicide Prevention Coalition and QPR to the County School Principals during an upcoming meeting on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.

State-Wide Coalition Conference – Planning

The Dublin/Laurens Coalition continues to finalize the plans for hosting the state –wide coalition meeting – “Joining Hands Across Georgia” – Friday, September 21, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Family Life Center in Dublin, GA. Payton Towns will be contacted about doing an article, following the conference.

Sheri McGuinness and Sally vander Straeten are assisting with this one-day networking event for Coalitions across the State of Georgia (approximately 75 -100 individuals). The agenda is now in the final stages and speakers have been secured. The committee continues to finalize the details of the facility and the conference needs in order to host this event. The Hospitality Committee will coordinate the noon meal and two snack breaks. The registration fee to cover this cost is $15.00 per person. The purpose of the conference is to share resources, discuss what works or does not work, sharing from those who have been awarded grants, and various accomplishments of the coalitions, as well as hearing from Sheri and Sally about what is going on at the state-level and any upcoming training opportunities.

Other reports/information/events:

Kelly informed the Coalition about a conference that is being planned for Thursday, September 27, 2012 that will include approximately 50 school social workers from 17 school districts (Bibb, Bleckley, Crawford, Dodge, Dooley, Houston, Jones, Macon, Monroe, Peach, Pulaski, Telfair, Twiggs, Wilcox, and Wilkinson Counties). Marquita Timmons and Daphne Fordham will participate in one segment (one hour) to address suicide prevention in the school setting and to introduce the concept of Sources of Strength. Daphne has attended the Sources of Strength Training Session. This will be a good opportunity to share the word with these school personnel.

The FY 13 Strategic Planning Guide was distributed to members today. Any input is welcomed and encouraged.

Denise informed the Coalition that we have applied for the Oconee EMC Round-Up Grants. Grant funds will target preventing suicide messages through local advertisement (bill boards, theatre ads, etc.). Gloria Bowen gave a brief report on the cost of various advertisement options she has been researching. The development of the ads will be a good project for the Youth Advisory Council to be involved in. The grant application was due 8/24/12 and we are waiting to hear from the results. A 5-minute presentation is required.

Gloria Bowen gave report on the SPC table throw. It has been ordered and the template received. The design looks very nice (black with white lettering and a green shamrock).

Denise discussed the appointment of a new Director for the SP Coalition. A rotation of officers was mentioned to the coalition today. No votes were taken, but the Coalition was asked to give consideration to the rotation officers for the next Fiscal Year cycle.

We have sent our Suicide Prevention Week Activities to Sheri McGuinness, per her request. Our activities are: A Suicide Prevention Presentation for the Laurens County School Principals on Tuesday, September 18, 2012, given by Denise Forbes and Tina Clements; the other activity is a Courier Herald article (Payton Towns) to promote the local Quilt Project. In addition, it was noted that we are also hosting the Statewide Suicide Prevention Coalition meeting (9/21/12).

We have received final payments from the invoices submitted for our DBHDD grant funds for the fiscal year (2012).

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. at the Community Mental Health Center, Building 5 – 2121 Bellevue Road, Dublin, GA. This will be a de-briefing meeting for those involved in the State-Wide Coalition Conference.

The next regular meeting of the Coalition will be Tuesday, October 30, 2012.
