The Suicide Prevention Coalition – Dublin/Laurens County met today with 20 present.  Denise Forbes opened the meeting with words of welcome and introduction of members for the benefit of those attending for the first time. 
The minutes of the June 28, 2011 meeting have been distributed and were accepted and approved.         

Contact information (spreadsheet of addresses, emails, etc.) was distributed for review/additions/corrections as needed.   Corrections and additions will be made to update this record.  

The Sub-committee volunteer signature sheet was distributed.  No additions or updates noted this date.  

Sub-Committee Reports 


Clint Thomas gave an update on the Golf Tournament (Four-Person Scramble) scheduled for Saturday, August 20, 2011 at Riverview Golf Course in Dublin from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.    The information has been distributed in the community and to the area golf courses.  The Pre-registration form is on the Coalition’s website. Advertisement through the Courier Herald and TV-35 will be finalized.  Clint will make contact with Sue Colter for a TV spot.  Two members from the Coalition will participate.   A sign-up sheet for volunteers to assist with the golf tournament was distributed during today’s meeting.   The “educational signs” to put on the golf course have been ordered.   The signs will also be used for other community events in the future.  Linda Bailey reported on consumer participation. The CSB will sponsor a team of consumers.  T-shirts will be ordered for the team and trophy awards will be presented to them.  They are very excited about the opportunity of participating in a community event.  Golf clubs for the team are needed (either by donation or borrowed).  If anyone knows where the CSB can obtain some clubs, please contact Clint Thomas at 272-1190 Ext. 1276.  


Kris Taylor, Chairperson, reported on the second support group meeting that was held on June 28, 2011.  Two individuals from the community were in attendance.  The subcommittee continues to plan, coordinate, and publicize for the support group. Kris reported that it is now on the media’s “Community Calendar”.  The next meeting is this evening, Tuesday, July 26, 2011 from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm in the Second Floor Conference Room at the V.A. Hospital in Dublin. 

Meeting Schedule: The fourth (4th) Tuesday of each month at the V.A. Hospital in Dublin in the Second Floor Conference Room from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.             


Rhonda Cumpsty is presently exploring the options of Facebook and Twitter.  She felt this was a good avenue to explore since so many adolescents and young adults use the electronic means of communication and socialization.

Jennifer Darley, Resource Subcommittee Chairperson, stated that no new resources for suicide prevention have been obtained.  Jennifer shared information regarding some resources for women’s health and made them available at the resource table during today’s meeting.     


Clint Thomas and Lisa Montford will continue to explore the option of establishing a youth advisory group for the coalition.  This will be more fully explored after the schools are back in session.   

We have submitted our final invoice for reimbursements from our $4000.00 grant for FY10-11.  Denise has been communicating with Sally vander Straeten.  The Coalition will reapply for this grant from DBHDD.  Denise will submit our proposal for FY11-12.

Update on Training Opportunities

Amy Williams, CSBMG counselor, reported on the Webinar offered by TAPS – Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors who care for Families of Fallen Military Heroes that she participated in on  July 21, 2011.  She distributed a handout on Cognitive-Behavioral Models for Suicide Prevention and gave an overview of the information. 

Denise mentioned the upcoming Resource Conference on December 1, 2011 at the Dubose Porter Center sponsored by Healthy Start. 

Training will be held Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Macon State College (10:00 a.m.).  Denise Forbes, Tina Clements, Sonya Shinhoster, and Dr. Rhonda Cumpsty will attend as representatives from the coalition.  In addition, 37 other registrants and 19 colleges will be participating in this event.   

Dr. Grigsby has invited the Coalition members to the Carl Vinson’s Suicide Prevention Program on September 8th at 1:00 p.m. in the V.A. Center Auditorium.  Members of the Coalition will participate in a brief presentation and also set up our exhibit table during this event.  Those interested in attending the program on September 8, 2011, should contact Dr. Grigsby.   Denise encouraged others from outside the CSB of Middle Georgia to attend as well. 

“Together We Can: Looking Back, Moving Forward”, a conference for Georgia’s Suicide Prevention Stakeholders, at the Macon Conference Center (Macon, GA) on September 8th –10th.   
Sally vander Straeten contacted Denise following the June Coalition meeting and also requested participation from our Coalition at the State-Wide Conference to serve on two panels. The book “13 Reasons Why” will also be a topic at this conference.  It is hoped that we can learn more about how other communities have utilized the book as an awareness resource.   

“Sources of Strength” Train-the-Trainer Training postponed until August 2012.    

Other  reports/information/events:

Contact is being made with individuals to recruit involvement from the Hispanic community on the Coalition.   Brenda Yawn is making contact with Pilar Archila to see if she is interested.  Was unable to reach her this week, but will continue to try to contact her.   

Marcia Dixon spoke about a community outreach project being discussed by members of the Pine Forest United Methodist Church for citizens, parents, educators and the general public. This would offer exposure about the Suicide Prevention Coalition.  She suggested using the role-play on how to deal with the issue.  Marcia was asked to talk back with the church and find out what date they are considering so that further plans can be made and finalized.  

Tina discussed organizing an Open-Air Movie at Southern Pines as a suicide prevention awareness event.  Belinda Allen has assisted in gathering information from the Recreation Department.  The name of the movie Tina is researching is,  “Odd Girl Out”, based on a book written by Rachel Simmons.  This was written for the Life Time movie channel and is rated PG13.  Tina will preview the content for appropriateness.  The cost of setting up the open-air movie is approximately $900.00 by Open Air Pics.  The cost of the movie is approximately $25.00.  The Dublin-Laurens Recreation Department has an opening for 9/10/11.  This event would target church youth groups, and would hopefully be promoted within the local schools.  Tina will discuss this with Hugh Kight.  Margaret Turner suggested that a panel of professionals (counselors, school principals, and pastors) be available following the film in case there is a need for this type of support following the viewing of the movie.  Everyone felt this was a good suggestion.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday,  August 23, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at the Community Mental Health Center, Building 5, 2121 Bellevue Road, Dublin, GA.
