The Suicide Prevention Coalition – Dublin/Laurens County met today with 25 present. Denise Forbes opened the meeting with words of welcome.

The minutes of the February 22, 2011 meeting have been distributed and were accepted and approved. Denise gave a brief overview of revenue and expenses for the coalition as of the current date. The CSBMG Accounting Department is working on a detailed spreadsheet and will provide this for Denise sometime during April.

Contact information (spreadsheet of addresses, emails, etc.) was not distributed for review/additions/corrections, this month. We will circulate this again next month for any updates as needed.

The sign-up sheet for sub-committee volunteers will be updated. Michael Bracewell, Ellise Tapley, and Jennifer Darley have all been added to the Media/Publicity Subcommittee.

Sub-Committee Reports

Fundraising Subcommittee

Linda Bailey reported on the raffle tickets (1500). Sold tickets and collected funds minus expenses (cost of tickets and cash prizes to three winners) produced total revenue of $1207.00. Sally vander Straeten has some outstanding tickets/cash to be collected. Ellise will send her another reminder to submit to Muriel Stephens at CSB. Clint Thomas was recognized for promoting the sell of approximately 300 tickets that remained during the last several days of the campaign. The raffle drawing was held, and the three winners were notified.

A Golf Tournament Fundraiser has been suggested. Clint Thomas will assist in the coordination of this along with Mr. Ed Pierce (Riverview Golf Course). The tentative date is Saturday, September 10, 2011 at the Riverview Golf Course in Dublin from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The rental form must be completed and submitted six (6) weeks prior. Advertisement in local paper and information to circulate in the community is also needed. We must have a minimum of 60 participants in order to have the tournament. Our goal is to have 60-80 participants. Awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will be given. Hugh Kight volunteered to bring his cooker if the committee decides to also sell food during the tournament. The profit margin should be no less than $1800.00 per Clint (not including food sales).

“Unmasking the Darkness” is tentatively planned for 2012. Laurie Wicker (former organizer for “Denim and Diamonds”) was contacted. She has agreed to meet with Tina Clements, Ellise Tapley, and Linda Bailey for a lunch meeting one day during April 2011. Tina will notify Linda and Ellise when a date has been secured with Laurie.

Survivors of Suicide Subcommittee

Kris Taylor, Chairperson, was not present today. Brenda Yawn reported. Brenda has talked with personnel at Fairview Park Hospital about a meeting room for the SOS group. The hospital had nothing to offer at the time. Brenda contacted the Laurens County Library and a room has been reserved for April and May. The room may not always be available, due to other events and functions that it is used for. The first meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, 2011 from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at the Laurens County Library.

Tina reported that the over-sized postcards to be distributed to law enforcement, funeral homes, and other community agencies have been printed and received. Law enforcement and funeral home directors will be given these to be made available for families, should a family want a team to visit them. Kris Taylor will be the initial contact person (since it is recommended that this person be a survivor). Hopefully, this will help to get the word out about the group meetings to promote attendance.

Public Relations Subcommittee

Rhonda Cumpsty, Chairperson, and Michael Bracewell (CSBMG IT Department) reported on the newly developed website on Word Press: stopsuicidelaurens.net. The Subcommittee will continue to work on development of the web page. Michael Bracewell, Ellise Tapley, and Jennifer Darley have been appointed to the sub-committee, and Rhonda will be scheduling a meeting in the near future. Email information can be submitted to: mailatstopsuicidelaurnes.org. Ellise will be in charge of monitoring and coordinating the emails. Training and event dates will be posted on the website as this information is received. Rhonda encouraged the coalition members to submit information to build up the web page. Michael discussed the capabilities of the website and links to other websites (Facebook, Twitter, and others as designated). One link will be to the Crisis Line, but it will be noted that the website itself, is NOT a crisis line. Ellise will send Michael the information regarding the suicide stats for Laurens County that Sally vander Straeten provided from the Oasis Website.

We are applying through the Youth Suicide Prevention Plan for funding through the Garrett Lee Smith Grant (for Laurens & Dodge County). We have received some letters of support (Dublin City Schools, CSB of Middle Georgia, Dodge County). The fourth letter of support from the Laurens County School system is still pending. Lisa Montford will be reminded to follow-up. The letters will be submitted to Adam Lesser, Youth Suicide Director.

Reminder:

Barbara Long, Executive Director, NAMI Central Georgia, will conduct school presentations. Her program, “The BAM Anti-Bullying Method”, is a power point tool designed for use with students in Pre-K through 5th grade. The Governor has issued a mandate for all schools to have “bullying” education programs in place by August 2011 and the schools must have an outside resource for this. NAMI can help fill this need.
