SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS

Survivors Of Suicide Subcommittee

Clara Boyer completed the Survivors of Suicide Facilitator training in August 2013. However, no one has been attending the Survivors of Suicide group.  Committee suggested that the sub-committee meet and discuss ways to contact survivors and encourage participation. May need to do another article for the newspaper; sub-committee could meet with Payton Towns from Courier Herald.

Marnie and her group will be working on Youth Friendly Survivors of Suicide packets; will discuss with Sherrie McGuinness. Their tentative goal is the end of October for completion and distribution.

Resources

Marlena Dixon continues to research for new materials. Denise obtained resource information from the annual state-wide Coalition Conference and sent to Marlena.  She also asked Committee to send any resource contact information to Marlena (Marlena Dixon@csbmg.com).

Events

Denise Forbes and Tina Clements attended the Annual Suicide Prevention Coalition Conference in Rome, GA on September 20, 2013. Tina reviewed the agenda for the day and discussed the keynote speaker, John Trautwein.  He is a survivor of suicide and established a foundation “Will-To-Live” in memory of his son who died by suicide at age of 15.  He encourages kids to talk to each other in his messages. Tina suggested that we ask him to be the keynote speaker for the Youth Rally in 2014. Destiny has the information and will make contact.

Denise and Tina were asked to participate in 3 breakout sessions at the Conference to discuss events that the Dublin-Laurens Coalition has been involved with such as the Youth Rally, grants, and the billboard contest.

Youth/Children (Sources of Strength)

Marnie reported that they had Adult Advisory training with 30 people in attendance (CSB of Middle GA staff and East Laurens Middle/High staff).  She reported that Johnson County Schools also contacted Marnie about the Sources of Strength program. Johnson County wants us to get the grant for them. The SOS Team met with Treutlen principal and will be planning for the Peer Leader training date with the school counselor.

Youth Advisory Council

Denise suggested that we invite the Youth Advisory Council to the next Coalition meeting and maybe have a small meeting with them after the Coalition meeting. The School Counselors also suggested that the Youth Advisory Council be awarded certificates of participation at the end of the school year. It was suggested to present the certificates at the Youth Rally or Honor’s Night at school. Counselors also suggested that the Sources of Strength students be recognized. Dr. Rumble suggested that we expand the Youth Advisory to do a public service project.

QPR Training

We have a total of 12 certified QPRs. Kelly Canady has QPR training schedule in 2014 at Dublin High School.

Tina Clements reported that we are in need of QPR books.  An order has been placed for approximately 500 books.  Sources of Strength was able to help with the cost.

Funding

Denise reported that Sally vander Straeten stated that we may be eligible for funds for the Coalition.  The funds will continue to be dispersed as previously by submitting invoices for various events, meetings, and trainings. She reported that funding may also be awarded through Suicide Safer Community for $3000.  There are 30 Coalitions state-wide and only 18 will be funded through Suicide Safer Community.

Dina McDonald is working on a Georgia Power Grant.  We can use funds to help with the 2014 Youth Rally.

Fundraising

Dina McDonald reported on the 2013 “Breaking the Stigma” T-Shirt design contest through Georgia Suicide Prevention Information Network (GSPIN).  The submission deadline is October 1 and will have public voting through GSPIN website.  The top 3 designs will be available to order through the website.

Fundraising options were discussed:

o       Quilt Raffle – Connie McDaniel reported that the Laurens Happy Quilters are making a quilt for Suicide Prevention Coalition. They plan to enter it in a competition in January. After the competition, they are donating the quilt to Suicide Prevention Coalition for a raffle fund raiser. Linda Bailey is in charge of getting the raffle together.

o       Bunco Tournament – Gloria sent Judi Davis an email inquiring about the Bunco Tournament.  Waiting for a reply.

o       Healing Heart Cookbook – Denise viewed the cookbook at the Annual Conference. She stated that this seemed to be an easy project and required no upfront financial investment.
