The Suicide Prevention Coalition – Dublin/Laurens County met today with 24 present. Denise Forbes opened the meeting with words of welcome and introduction of members for the benefit of those attending for the first time.
The minutes of the August 23, 2011 meeting have been distributed and were accepted and approved.
Contact information (spreadsheet of addresses, emails, etc.) was distributed for review/additions/corrections as needed. No corrections were noted.
The Sub-committee volunteer signature sheet was distributed (no additions or updates were noted).
SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE SUBCOMMITTEE
The next regular meeting will be held this evening, Tuesday, September 27, 2011 from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm in the Second Floor Conference Room at the V.A. Hospital in Dublin. It is expected that there will be at least three members in the group this evening. Kris Taylor has proposed that speakers in the local churches might be a means of “getting the word” out about the SOS meetings.
Meeting Schedule: The fourth (4th) Tuesday of each month at the V.A. Hospital in Dublin in the Second Floor Conference Room from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Marquitta Timmons and Jakimva Martin presented on the development of a youth advisory council. They have developed an application to be used for solicitation of students from the local city and county schools. Margaret Turner will assist with this effort at Trinity Christian School. The principals will most likely make the final selection when the applications are received and reviewed. A drafted copy of the application was distributed and several suggestions were offered from various coalition members. The application will be revised before it is distributed. Hugh Kight felt strongly about moving on this action so that some students could be identified prior to the coalition meeting on October 25, 2011. It is hoped that some of the selected students would be able to attend the October meeting. The goal is to recruit two students from each local school, which would be a total of eight students on the Youth Advisory Council.
Marquitta Timmons reported that she has conducted training in the school system. The training addressed notifying Administrative staff of the Coalition; alerted staff to never leave a student alone if suicidal thoughts are suspected; advised staff to inform students that help is available, shared the SPC brochure with staff to provide to students as needed, and informed staff of the SPC meeting dates.
The Coalition’s FY12 proposal for the grant from DBHDD was revised based on Sally Vander Straeten’s suggestions and re-submitted. The grant will have an effective date of August 15, 2011. We continue to seek creative means of community involvement with the coalition.

Tina reported on QPR trainings (FY12). The next scheduled QPR Training is Thursday, September 29, 2011 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. This training will be provided for the Heart of Georgia Healthy Start staff members and WIC staff at the request of the Director (Margaret Turner). A pre-test and post-test will be given. There are three additional slots open for anyone who is interested in attending.
Update on Training Opportunities
Marquitta Timmons has contacted Officer Brian Tapley with the Dublin City Police Department. They will meet next week to coordinate the training video to be used for law enforcement training.
Suicide Prevention Community Event (FY12): On Thursday, November 3, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Dr. Grigsby will conduct a continuation of training (Recovery Resources) for university/college counseling center staff with a focus on veterans. This training is open to Technical Schools and Two-Year colleges/schools. The CSB of Middle Georgia will provide the location for the training at CMHC Building 4. Patricia Filios, USG Military Outreach Coordinator from Atlanta, Georgia will coordinate plans for the noon meal. This training will count as an event for the Coalition as it will deal with issues around suicide and suicide prevention, so we will submit for reimbursement from our grant. We are expecting approximately 60 people and we will have our resource table set up. Coalition members will be assisting with this event as needed. .
Tina Clements reported on the Stakeholders’ Conference that was held in Macon, GA during September. Tina, Ellise Tapley, and Lisa Montford attended a session that addressed “sustaining a coalition”. The session was informative and brought attention to the fact that we may need to “re-group” and focus more on community awareness of the coalition before taking on larger projects at this point in time. A small group of interested coalition members meet to discuss this following the regular coalition meeting today. Plans were made to launch an awareness campaign and proclamation signing by October 25, 2011 (the next regular meeting date). Ellise will prepare a list of task that need to be completed, and we will solicit volunteers to assist with planning.

The Coalition approved for Barbara Flanders to be contacted about volunteering as the project manager for the Coalition.
